As a result of the suspension from the ICC, the BCCI has replaced Zimbabwe with Sri Lanka for the three T20s that they were scheduled to play in India in January 2020. The venues for the matches - to be held on January 5, 7 and 10 - have been confirmed as Guwahati, Indore and Pune. India are currently hosting South Africa for three T20s and Tests each, with the home season also including visits from Bangladesh, West Indies and Australia before South Africa for ODIs in March next year.

Ajantha Mendis, the pioneer of mystery spin at the international level, has announced his retirement from all forms of cricket. Mendis' last appearance for Sri Lanka had come in 2015, having made his debut seven years earlier against West Indies at Port-of-Spain.

All-rounder Hardik Pandya has returned to India's T20 squad for the three-match series against South Africa, replacing Bhuvneshwar Kumar in the only change from the side that was selected for as many T20s in West Indies. MS Dhoni, however, continues to be missing after opting for a break during the West Indies tour.
