Jimmy Neesham dismissed him after a match-defining knock of 47 from just 18 deliveries as England won the series 3-2 in the decider, which went into a Super Over. Bairstow was called on to bat again in the one-over eliminator.

The Level 1 breach has added to the already existing one demerit point that Bairstow had attracted this May when he swung his bat at the stumps in frustration, in an ODI against Pakistan. As per ICC rules, the accumulation of four demerit points inside a two-year tenure leads to suspension.

Bairstow rejoined England's Test squad despite being initially dropped for the two Tests in New Zealand during the ongoing tour, offering cover for Joe Denly. Bairstow will stay with the Test squad for the two warm-up matches before the first Test. Denly's recovery from an ankle ligament injury, which also ruled him out of the T20 series, ensures his absence from England's first warm-up game as he strives to regain fitness for the second game.

The first Test starts on November 21 at Mount Maunganui, the first five-day international fixture for the ground, before the final match at Hamilton from November 29.
