Incessant rain eliminated Punjab in the quarter-final of the Vijay Hazare Trophy, as Tamil Nadu qualified for the semi-final by virtue of more wins in the league stage. A match reduced to 47 overs a side due to a wet outfield at the Alur (1) ground was further cut short to 39 when Tamil Nadu's innings was interrupted by rain. By then, they had reached 174 for 6, with Baba Aparajith getting 56.
Punjab had to chase a revised target of 195 in as many overs, but were forced off the field at 52 for 2 after just 12.2 overs were bowled. The players were not to return again as the match was called off and Tamil Nadu declared winners on the basis of nine wins out of nine in the league stage in comparison to Punjab's five out of eight. "Going out like this is very unfortunate and I think it's a very bad rule to decide something like that. For the knockouts, there should definitely be a reserve day. There has to be a reserve day for the knockouts," Punjab's captain Mandeep Singh said while expressing his disappointment at the outcome.
No Result: Chhattisgarh 190 for 6 in 45.4 overs (Harpreet 83, Khare 59*; Kulkarni 2/9) vs Mumbai 95 for 0 in 11.3 overs (Jaiswal 60*, Tare 31*)
Mumbai were also left wondering what would have been with their own quarter-final wash-out against Chhattisgarh at Alur (2). Shreyas Iyer chose to bowl first expecting the conditions to aid his seamers and Dhawal Kulkarni answered the call well. Chhattisgarh were 40 for 3 before Harpreet Singh's 83 and Amandeep Khare's 59* took them to 190 for 6, as their innings was stalled after 45.4 overs.
Mumba's openers Yashaswi Jaiswal and Aditya Tare came out all guns blazing to fire 95 runs in an unbroken stand off just 11.3 overs. But rain returned again only to dampen their spirits and end the game prematurely. Chhattisgarh progressed courtesy of five wins in the league stage to Mumbai's four, with one of those coming over Mumbai themselves in a successful chase of 318. Like Mandeep Singh, Iyer also believed it was unfair on their part to have been eliminated this way. "It's really disappointing. We gave our heart, soul and tears for this amazing tournament, and unfortunately, the way we started the season, rain was affecting every game", he said.
