Shakib violated Article 2.4.4 of the ICC Anti-Corruption Unit (ACU) clause, which deals with "failing to disclose to the ACU (without unnecessary delay) full details of any approaches or invitations received by the Participant to engage in Corrupt Conduct under the Anti-Corruption Code."

In 2018, alleged bookie Deepak Aggarwal approached the all-rounder twice: first during an ODI tri-series between Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, and Zimbabwe at home in January, and then during the IPL that year, while the all-rounder was representing the Sunrisers Hyderabad. The IPL game about which the bookie approached Shakib was that between the Sunrisers and the Kings XI Punjab on April 26 that year.

The ICC has sanctioned Shakib for his failure to report to the authorities about approaches for potentially engaging in corruption as well as disclosing full details of the same. The period of two years of ban includes one suspension, during which he must not commit any offense under the ACU code. Additionally, he must consistently participate in anti-corruption education and/or rehabilitation programs.

After declaring the ban, Alex Marshall, ICC's general manager - of integrity, said, "Shakib Al Hasan is a highly experienced international cricketer. He has attended many education sessions and knows his obligations under the Code. He should have reported each of these approaches. Shakib has accepted his errors and cooperated fully with the investigation."

The outcome comes at an already tumultuous time for the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB), which recently witnessed a strike by the players - ironically led by Shakib - who demanded a drastic change in the administration of the game in the country. The ban on Shakib clearly eliminates him from the upcoming tour of India, where Bangladesh is due to play 3 T20s and 2 Tests.

"I am obviously extremely sad to have been banned from the game I love, but I completely accept my sanction for not reporting the approaches," Shakib said as per an ICC statement. "The ICC ACU is reliant on players to play a central part in the fight against corruption and I didn't do my duty in this instance."

Shakib currently sits among the best of all-rounders in the game across all three formats, ranked numbers 3, 1, and 2 in the charts in Tests, ODIs, and T20 internationals, respectively. In the World Cup this year, he was the third-highest run-getter with 606 runs at 71.88 while also bagging 11 wickets. Should Shakib satisfy all conditions during the one-year suspension period of his ban, he will be free to return to cricket from October 29, 2020, onwards but stares at missing out on the World T20 2020 in Australia, scheduled to begin from October 18 next year.
