Dhawan hurt his left shoulder while fielding in the series-deciding third ODI against Australia at Bangalore recently. KL Rahul took his place at the top, so he did not come out to open the innings. Dhawan's absence from the ODI squad puts the 20-year-old Shaw in line for his ODI debut, having cracked a century in his first Test for India against West Indies in 2018.

Shaw has also been in sublime form of late, slamming a couple of half-centuries for Mumbai in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy before smashing a double hundred in the Ranji Trophy. That aside, he hit 150 for India A against a New Zealand XI in a List A game at Lincoln last week.

Meanwhile, the T20 squad has called up Samson - who played his first international game back in 2015 - to take Dhawan's place. Samson played only his second T20 for India this home season against Sri Lanka at Pune, where he had taken Rishabh Pant's place.

In another change to the team that beat Sri Lanka 2-0, the selectors have also added fast bowler Mohammad Shami to the T20 side.

India begin their tour of New Zealand with the five-match T20 series followed by 3 ODIs and 2 Tests.
