Test squad: Faf du Plessis (c), Temba Bavuma (vc), Theunis de Bruyn, Quinton de Kock (wk), Dean Elgar, Zubayr Hamza, Keshav Maharaj, Aiden Markram, Senuran Muthusamy, Lungi Ngidi, Anrich Nortje, Vernon Philander, Dane Piedt, Kagiso Rabada and Rudi Second (wk)

T20I squad: Quinton de Kock (c & wk), Rassie van der Dussen (vc), Temba Bavuma, Junior Dala, Bjorn Fortuin, Beuran Hendricks, Reeza Hendricks, David Miller, Anrich Nortje, Andile Phehlukwayo, Dwaine Pretorius, Kagiso Rabada, Tabraiz Shamsi and Jon-Jon Smuts

"All three newcomers to the Test side have more than earned their spurs through impressive performances in last season's Four-Day Franchise competition," said Corrie van Zyl, Cricket South Africa's acting Director of Cricket.

The touring party for Tests also includes Zubayr Hamza, Dane Piedt and Theunis de Bruyn, who total merely seventeen Tests between them, as South Africa look to move on from the retirements of Morne Morkel, AB de Villiers, Dale Steyn and Hashim Amla. Aside from that, newcomers in the T20 squad are Temba Bavuma, Bjorn Fortuin and Nortje, who was initially named in the World Cup squad but later ruled out due to injury.

Left-arm spinner Keshav Maharaj, the highest wicket-taker for South Africa on their of Sri Lanka in 2018 - where he also grabbed career-best figures of 9 for 129 - has another left-armer Muthusamy and off-spinner Piedt for support in India, with the latter being the highest wicket-taker in the domestic first-class competition last year.

The T20 squad, which has regular captain Faf du Plessis missing, also excludes Aiden Markram, Lungi Ngidi and de Bruyn, all of whom will be engaged with South Africa A, who will be playing four-day games in India in September. While Steyn - who recently retired from Tests - remained available for selection, he was not favoured with younger names coming into the fray.

"As far as the T20 squad is concerned, Temba Bavuma and Bjorn Fortuin were two of the standout players in the CSA T20 Challenge last season while Nortje was outstanding in the Mzansi Super League until ruled out by injury," van Zyl said. "The T20 series gives us the last chance to have a look at our leadership and batting options as the next edition of the ICC Men's T20 World Cup is now little more than a year away which is why we have gone with an inexperienced leadership group."

South Africa begin their tour of India with the three-match T20 series from September 15 before the action shifts to Test match cricket. The Tests commence on October 2 and will be played at Visakhapatnam, Ranchi and Pune.
