Squad: Aaron Finch (c), Alex Carey (vc), Pat Cummins (vc), Sean Abbott, Ashton Agar, Peter Handscomb, Josh Hazlewood, Marnus Labuschagne, Kane Richardson, Steven Smith, Mitchell Starc, Ashton Turner, David Warner and Adam Zampa

Maxwell had recently taken a break from cricket following mental health issues, but had declared his availability a few days earlier. He will be returning to playing cricket for the Melbourne Stars in the ongoing BBL but had suffered a below-average World Cup where he averaged just 22.13 in eight innings. Similar was the case with Stoinis, who was also dropped from Australia's T20 squads to face Sri Lanka and Pakistan earlier this summer.

But the most surprising omission has come in the form of Khawaja, who shared the Player of the Tournament title - alongside Labuschagne - in this season's Marsh Cup, Australia's domestic one-day cup. Coach Justin Langer, who is also a selector, described Khawaja and Marsh's dropping as unfortunate with the presence of top-order batsmen in captain Aaron Finch, David Warner and Steven Smith.

Test regular Nathan Lyon also found no place despite playing the ODI series in India in early 2019 as well as the World Cup, with Adam Zampa and Ashton Agar being given the nod. Even Nathan Coulter-Nile, who led the wicket-taking in the Marsh Cup, got dropped in favor of Josh Hazlewood and Sean Abbott, who was recalled despite having played only one ODI in 2014.

Alex Carey, a wicketkeeper-batsman, and fast bowler Pat Cummins will deputize for Finch. Peter Handscomb and Ashton Turner provide back-up keeping options, while Mitchell Starc and Kane Richardson will take up other pace bowling spots.

Australia will be resting their head coach Langer for the series in India with senior assistant Andrew McDonald taking charge of the side. The first ODI will be taking place on January 14, just a week after the conclusion of the ongoing Test series against New Zealand at home.
