Moeen endured a torrid first Test, with match figures of 3 for 172, in high contrast to his counterpart Nathan Lyon, who returned match-winning figures of 9 for 161 on a spin-friendly surface. Apart from discouraging form with the ball, Moeen managed scores of 0 and 4 in the Test, culminating into a torrid run with the bat.

Meanwhile, with James Anderson ruled out for at least until the third Test, England seem set to hand Jofra Archer a debut. The fast bowler proved his fitness in a game for Sussex 2nd XI, bagging six wickets apart from smashing a century. Left-arm pacer Sam Curran also stands a chance to take Anderson's place in the eleven, having played Ireland in the one-off Test at Lord's immediately before the Ashes.

Having played his 50th Test against New Zealand at Auckland - a game where England bowled out for 58 while batting first - in March 2018, Moeen was dropped from the side for the first time. He was recalled for the Southampton Test against India that home summer, returning with a Man of the Match performance with a half-century and nine wickets as England clinched the series. Since August 1 last year, Moeen is the leading wicket-taker in Test match cricket - he headed the charts for England during the winter tours of Sri Lanka and West Indies - but a disappointing game at Edgbaston resulted in Australia's middle-order snatching the game away with every fruitless over.

Other than Moeen being omitted and Anderson left out due to injury, the rest of England's line-up is likely to remain the same despite low scores from a number of middle-order batsmen, not least Jonny Bairstow, who has been below par with the bat since last summer.
